How the math works
FIRE number = (spending − other income) ÷ withdrawal rate. At 4%, that's 25× what your portfolio has to cover each year.
Growth is after inflation, so every result is in today's dollars. U.S. stocks have averaged roughly 10% a year before inflation, or about 7% after, but no single year is average. Growth compounds monthly. Your monthly investment goes up by your yearly raise once a year, on top of inflation.
Your Coast FIRE number today
How the math works
Coast FIRE is the balance that grows into your full FIRE number by your retirement age with zero new contributions: FIRE number ÷ (1 + return)years left.
The gold line rises every year because you have less time left to compound. Once your balance crosses it, you can stop investing and still retire on time.
